Technical specifications:
Access rights:
Access rights mean what control different users
of a computer have over it. For example a student may
have rights to run programs, and save their work in
one place, but not change or delete files in another
location.
If students do not have full access rights to the files
used by EyeSpeak, then it cannot work.
A common problem is when a teacher or system administrator
installs EyeSpeak without giving the correct access
rights to the students. EyeSpeak crashes when students
log in and try to use it.
If the access rights are wrong, some of the following
may happen.
- When EyeSpeak starts it might crash, giving a message
saying “EyeSpeak has become corrupt please reinstall”
or ask for the serial number and activation code again,
even though it has already been entered.
- When an existing student logs in, or a new one tries
to log in, it could either crash, or say “EyeSpeak
has become corrupt please reinstall”. This does
not necessarily mean EyeSpeak needs to be reinstalled.
Someone could have changed the access rights of the
program, which will cause this error.
To check the access rights, log on as Administrator
and do the following steps:
Windows 2000
- Open “windows explorer”. This can either
be done by choosing “Start->programs->windows
explorer”, choosing “Start->Run”
typing “explorer” then clicking OK, or
holding down the “windows” key (on the
bottom left of the keyboard between CTRL and ALT)
and pressing “E” at the same time.
- Double click on “My computer” then “C”,
“Program files” “EyeSpeak”.
- Right click on the “EyeSpeak” folder,
and choose “Properties” from the bottom
of the menu. The following window should appear.
- Click on the Security tab, look under “Name”
to see who can use the folder. Click on “Student”
or something similar under “Name”. Look
down to “Permissions”. “Full”
control should have a tick underneath “Allow”.
If this is not the case then it will need to be changed.
A student cannot change their rights, only a system
administrator or someone with their rights can change
this. Get the computer technician, or teacher with
administrator rights to change this if they are available.
Windows XP
- Open “windows explorer”. This can either
be done by choosing “Start->programs->windows
explorer”, choosing “Start->Run”
typing “explorer” then clicking OK, or
holding down the “windows” key (on the
bottom left of the keyboard between CTRL and ALT)
and pressing “E” at the same time.
- Double click on “My computer” then “C”,
“Program files” “EyeSpeak”.
- Right click on the “EyeSpeak” folder,
and choose “Properties” from the bottom
of the menu. The following window should appear. If
there is a security tab showing like in the picture,
proceed to 7.
- If not, then you will need to make it visible. Under
Windows Explorer, choose the menu “Tools”
at the top, then “folder options”. Click
on the “View” tab at the top. The following
should be visible.
- Look at the “Advanced settings” area,
and scroll down to the bottom of the list. The last
checkbox on the list will say “Use simple file
sharing (Recommended)” click on the tick next
to this to make it go away. We don’t want simple
file sharing for this folder as it does not let us
set the correct access rights. Click OK.
- Go back to Windows Explorer, Right click on the
“EyeSpeak” folder, and choose “Properties”
from the bottom of the menu. The window seen in step
3 should now have a Security tab present.
