EyeSpeak Student Manual:
Length Bar:
The Length Bar has three purposes.
When information is being viewed on the pronunciation
of a vowel, the length bar represents the length of
the vowel. The green area represents an appropriate
length for the vowel. The read area to the left of this
represents a length too short for the vowel, and the
red area to the right represents a length too long for
it. The length of time for which the student and the
teacher pronounced the vowel are marked on the bar by
the words You and Teacher accordingly. The goal is to
make You appear at the same point on the bar as Teacher,
or at least to have it appear in the green section of
the bar. The location of the green section of the bar
will vary depending on the length of the vowel that
is being practiced.
When information is being viewed on the pronunciation
of the contrasting sound in a consonant lesson where
the two consonants differ only in their voicing, the
length bar represents the voicing on the consonant.
The left of the bar represents a voiced sound and the
right of the bar represents an unvoiced sound. The side
of the bar that the student should be aiming for will
be green. The words You and Teacher appear on the voicing
bar in a similar way to the vowel bar.
When information is being viewed on the pronunciation
of the contrasting sound in a consonant lesson where
the two consonants tdo not differ only in their voicing,
the poles of the length bar each represent one of the
contrasting sounds. The left of the bar represents the
sound in the first word and the right of the bar represents
the sound in the second word. The side of the bar that
the student should be aiming for will be green. The
words You and Teacher appear on this bar in a similar
way to the vowel bar.
